“The pace of petroleum-based material innovation has stalled and we see the future in biology. Nature is the best manufacturing system, so we partner with her to discover, design, and create simply better products.”

In 2013, Josh joined Zach Serber and Jed Dean in founding Zymergen. Previously, Josh was a partner at Norcob Capital and a managing director in Merchant Banking at Rothschild. He holds an MA in International Relations and MPPM from Yale University, as well as a BA from University of California, Berkeley.

Jed Dean

VP OF OPERATIONS AND ENGINEERING AND CO-FOUNDER

“By applying engineering rigor to the biological sciences, we’re able to achieve the precision and throughput that’s both unprecedented and essential in the industry.”

Jed has developed technology and automation for life sciences at Amyris and at the Stanford Genome Technology Center. He is an inventor on numerous patents on automating microbial engineering. He holds a PhD in Biochemistry from Stanford University and BS in Molecular Biology from Purdue University.

Judy Gilbert

CHIEF PEOPLE OFFICER

“Building a culture that supports collaboration, learning and innovation allows us to attract, develop, and challenge the amazing people carrying out Zymergen’s mission.”

Judy came to Zymergen from Google where she spent 12 years leading people operations for businesses including YouTube and X Development (formerly Google X). She holds an MBA from Stanford University and ABs in Economics and History from Kenyon College.

Jack Gold

CHIEF MARKETING OFFICER

“We have an unbelievable opportunity to tell the incredible story of a startup in Emeryville changing the way we make our world.”

After cutting his teeth at Saatchi & Saatchi in London and Team One in Los Angeles, Jack spent 21 years at Nike leading multiple brand teams in global soccer, training, and U.S. field sports. He studied advertising at Watford College in the UK.

Mina Kim

CHIEF LEGAL OFFICER

“Every day we’re exploring how to advance and protect an uncharted landscape of novel ideas and innovations for the benefit of science.”

Mina joined Zymergen after serving as general counsel at Sunrun, general counsel of FLY Leasing, and, most recently, as SVP, Corporate Strategy & General Counsel at Atara Biotherapeutics. She has a BA in History from Dartmouth College and a JD from Harvard Law School.

CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER

“We imagine software and automation at a scale the industry hasn’t considered.”

Prior to joining Zymergen, Aaron co-founded WibiData, and he was the first employee at Cloudera. Aaron holds a BS from Cornell University and an MS from the University of Washington, both in Computer Science. He holds several patents on predictive modeling for microbial engineering.

Richard Pieters

PRESIDENT, PRODUCTS

“We’re creating products I never dreamed could exist, and they’ll be on the market in months to years instead of decades to lifetimes.”

Richard has over 20 years of experience in chemicals and industrial businesses, previously holding leadership roles at DSM and General Electric Plastics. He holds an MBA from the University of Twente and a BS in Aeronautical Engineering from the College of Advanced Technology in Haarlem, Netherlands.

Zach Serber

CHIEF SCIENCE OFFICER AND
CO-FOUNDER

“Our future depends on solving problems sustainably. Biology has been the answer for billions of years; we have only to rediscover it.”

Zach has extensive experience in industrial biotechnology, with 17 peer-reviewed publications and several patents across biomolecular discovery and microbial engineering. Formerly a director of biology at Amyris, he holds a PhD in Biophysics from University of California, San Francisco, an MSc in Neuroscience from the University of Edinburgh in the UK, and a BA in Biophysics from Columbia University.
